I'm writing this article about volleyball officiating, but volleyball is only the metaphor for the point of the article. This could be about any official in any sport, for it's really about the official's mindset. Football, basketball, baseball, etc., officials and their assignors will immediately identify with the attitudes expressed here.
Warning: It's not for the faint of heart.
A few years ago the "school authorities" introduced volleyball as a varsity sport in the high schools of Northern Virginia. It had been a club sport but was now being moved to the mainstream. Of course, volleyball teams need volleyball officials. Since there had been no high school volleyball, there were no high school volleyball officials living anywhere nearby.
